Our three sources
- Manufacturer specs. Speed ratings, cocking systems, included scopes and arrows, and listed features as published by the maker.
- Verified Amazon ratings. Average star rating and number of ratings, recorded at a specific date (currently September 2026), along with approximate prices.
- Owner feedback themes. Recurring topics in owner discussions on hunting forums and Reddit. We summarize patterns, never quote or fabricate individual reviews.
What we don't do
We do not claim to have shot, tested or handled any crossbow. We do not invent testimonials, user reviews, star ratings, weights, widths or draw weights. If a spec is not in our verified data, it does not appear on the site.
This is a deliberate choice. Honest research beats pretend testing.
How we calculate energy
For fair comparisons, we calculate kinetic energy and momentum for every bow using its rated FPS and a 400 grain arrow: KE = grain × FPS² ÷ 450,240 and momentum = grain × FPS ÷ 225,218. These are muzzle values. Try your own numbers in the calculator.
The CrossbowReport Score
Our score out of 10 is an editorial judgment that weighs:
- Cocking system, especially de-cocking
- What is included (scope, arrows, accessories)
- Speed relative to price
- The public owner rating picture, weighted by sample size
- Value against close alternatives
It is not an aggregate rating and is not presented as one.
